Information for Electricians: Registering with EWRB New Zealand

Electricians, did you know that to be able to work in New Zealand you will need to be registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) of New Zealand?

If you are looking to move to New Zealand within the next 12 months then we encourage all electricians to look into commencing the registration application process as soon as possible as this can take some time. Starting the registration early in your visa journey will minimise delays. The registration is integral because not only will employers potentially need an assessment from the EWRB, you will require this for your visa application.

The first step in the registration process is the EWRB assessment where you will need to meet a few criteria which revolve around your qualification(s) and work experience. The assessment application will assess your work experience and qualifications against the criteria for registration and you must meet the rules of the Electrical Workers Registration Board. One of the key criteria is that you will need to have 4 years work experience with 8000 hours for the standard Electrician class.

Your overseas qualifications will also be assessed alongside your experience as these may entitle you to exemptions from Electrician registration. The assessment will stipulate what requirements must be meet before full registration can be granted. If you do have steps to take to gain your full registration you will be notified.  You may then need to apply for a Limited Certificate as the limited certificate allows you to complete any requirements detailed from the assessment. This in turn means you will need to secure a job and ensure you have a supervisor to oversee your work.
