Fabrication Workshop Manager


Job Title: Workshop Manager

Location: Christchurch

Reports to: Operations Manager

Hours: 40-50 per week, plus rotational Saturday morning as required

POSITION:

The Workshop Manager ensures company manufacturing facility is working at its optimal performance. They are responsible for team performance and quality standards including:

  • Meeting or exceeding production KPI’s

  • Ensuring scheduled maintenance is completed

  • Adherence to safe operational practices and H&S requirements

  • Ensuring finished product meets or exceeds the expectations of our trade clients and the end user.

  • Team development and training

  • Monitoring factory operating staff expenses

KEY TASKS AND EXPECTED RESULTS:

Professional and Personal Development:

  • To undertake identified personal training/development with the prior approval of the Operations Manager.

  • To keep up-to-date and demonstrate awareness of relevant legislation and best practice for production based businesses.

PRODUCTION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Responsible for job allocation and job flow in the workshop including job scheduling and labour allocation for day-to-day operations.

  • Co-ordinate resources, (operational and human) schedules and activities to effectively manage jobs.

  • Regularly check progress on each job and quickly communicate delays or concerns to the Operations Manager.

  • Act as decision maker and escalator when projects stall.

  • Receive and review feedback from customers and follow up to ensure customer satisfaction.

  • Identify staff that require on-going training and implement training opportunities to ensure their skills are improved. Work with apprentices and semi-skilled staff to role model appropriate technical skills.

  • Provide feedback to staff that are not performing to the expected level and ensure human resources are informed of trends in performance.

  • Assist with quoting, project management, materials purchasing, and quality checks as needed.

  • Oversee Logistics, Fabrication, and Machine operations areas ensuring work is carried out in a safe and efficient manner

  • Work with the despatch and PPC teams to respond to client’s requests for updates on the status of their jobs and keep the communication channels open to ensure information is accurate.

  • Promote a Health and Safety culture within the business.

  • Workshop consumables are at optimum levels and reorder cycles are being adhered to

  • Yard is clean, safe and all products are stowed to minimise damage

  • Deliver business profitability by ensuring staff are working efficiently and effectively: Working smart, without compromise of quality.

  • Projects are delivered on time and to the standards as set by the Operations Manager

  • Work areas are kept clean and stocked to ensure flow and efficiency is at optimum levels and movement waste is minimised. Refer 5S

  • Planned maintenance is completed and documented. Unplanned maintenance is handled efficiently, and lessons learned are implemented to reduce further chances of recurrence

TEAM LEADERSHIP ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Line management of workshop staff including training needs assessment and delivery. Review and manage performance against KPIs in collaboration with the Operations Manager.

  • Contribute to guidelines for SOPs in fabrication & relevant H&S.

  • Ensure the staff are kept up to date with product information and any changes in processing are communicated.

  • Work with the wider Team to ensure the seamless handover and delivery between Machinists, Fabricators & Installers.

Quality / Policy Compliance:

  • Ensure all statutory obligations are met, zero non-compliance issues and evidence of continuous improvement.

  • Ensure full compliance with all relevant internal policies and procedures.

  • Contribute to companywide improvement initiatives that ensure that the organisation develops a culture of best practice and continuous improvement.

SAFETY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Play an active role in keeping the team safe from both accidental injury and preventable longer term 'wear and tear' or exposure injury.

  • Ensure that health & safety is embedded into day-to-day operational practice.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience at a senior fabrication level including deliverables in quality control.

TRAINING:

  • As part of your personal development program, to remain ahead of current industry related trends, practices and disciplines and undertake regular updates in either competency training or changes in law as required.

Skills and Experience:

  • Quality and productivity focussed

  • Production and or processing sector experience

  • Stone industry experience, preferably in Fabrication, QA, and/or machine operation
